Season 1 Prize Pool Announced — Here Is What Is at Stake

Varsity Basketball League is proud to announce the full prize pool for Season 1. The total prize fund of ₦15,000,000 will be distributed across all city championships and the national final, making this the most lucrative individual basketball competition ever held in West Africa.

The prize breakdown

National Champion: ₦5,000,000. National Runner-Up: ₦2,500,000. National Semi-Finalists (2 players): ₦1,000,000 each. City Champions (4 cities): ₦750,000 each. City Runners-Up (4 cities): ₦375,000 each.

Performance bonuses

In addition to placement prizes, VBL will award performance bonuses throughout the season. The Most Clutch Player award — given to the competitor with the highest closing rate in decisive possessions — carries a ₦500,000 bonus. The VBL Most Valuable Player award, voted on by a panel of former professional players and league officials, comes with a ₦750,000 bonus and a confirmed spot in the VBL All-Star Exhibition next season.

What this means

For many of the players competing in Season 1, these prizes represent genuine life-changing sums. VBL founder and CEO Kunle Adesanya said: “We built this league to give the best individual players in Nigeria and West Africa a platform and a prize that matches their talent. Season 1 is just the beginning.”
